Circumcision and initiation ceremonies have been a contentious topic in South Africa for many years. Since 1995 more than 1 000 young boys have died following circumcision. It was this statistic that prompted BDlive contributor Gareth van Onselen to comment on this in his column, eluding to culture playing a big part in these deaths. This caused a social media backlash with many accusing Gareth of having no place to speak on this matter. Arye Kellman is joined by Gareth van Onselen on the line explaining his reasoning behind the column and what he hopes to achieve by it, then Claire Mawisa pops into studio to give her take on this contentious topic.
